So also we, holding Art in our hands, confidently consider ourselves to be its masters; boldly we direct it, we renew, reform and manifest it; we sell it for money, use it to please those in power; turn to it at one moment for amusement - right down to popular songs and night-clubs, and at another - grabbing the nearest weapon, cork or cudgel - for the passing needs of politics and for narrow-minded social ends. But art is not defiled by our efforts, neither does it thereby depart from its true nature, but on each occasion and in each application it gives to us a part of its secret inner light.— Alexandr Solzhenitsyn, Nobel Prize in Literature 1970

American Indian Rapper SupaMan was just named as an MTV Artist of the Week

The news: Christian Parrish Takes the Gun. Remember his name.

The Apsáalooke American Indian hails from the Crow Nation Reservation near Billings, Mont., and on March 21, the MTV Iggy blog named him Artist of the Week from among hundreds of competitors.

What makes him special? Well, he raps under the name “SupaMan,” he sings, he makes crazy drum loops, he’s a champion powwow fancy dancer and sometimes, if you’re lucky, he does all four at the same time.

Mi Triqui: Life in Three Languages

Like many migrant children from Mexico, Bernadina Hernández came to the United States without speaking a word of English. She didn’t speak Spanish either, only Triqui — the Indigenous language of her pueblo in Oaxaca. Now she’s a leader in her community and the breadwinner of her family.

This short documentary takes a look at the work Bernadina does for Indigenous families, primarily Triquis from the state of Oaxaca, in her hometown of Hollister, CA.

Bermadina is also a member of La Unión Indígena, an organization serving Indigenous-language speakers in many of central California’s agricultural communities.

This documentary was part of Raquel Maria Dillon’s master’s thesis at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism. Raquel now works as a video journalist for the Associated Press. Follow her on Twitter at @RaquelAPLA.

EDITOR’S NOTE: We’re reposting “Mi Triqui” in hopes that more people see it. Help us share Bernadina’s amazing story by passing along this video to family and friends. A special thanks to Raquel for making this video available to the public again.

but for real the voter reg workshop was REALLY cool and i can totally see myself organizing one for my town during the summer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ive helped set up several in the past but ive never taken the initiative to plan one out all by myself but like… voting is super important and since i have ways of setting up a drive (like honestly i have so many resources) I CAN DO SO MANY GOOD THINGS. stay tuned Michelle Grouchito Community Organizer 2k14 (my intern days weren’t all that bad…) (politics are ok as long as im doing my own thing i guess) (i am really excited) (bye)

have to write an article about the convention. i wonder if they’ll publish “i took a selfie with the governor, was too nice to people, and ate a lot of questionable food” in the newsletter. lettuce find out

honestly the most important thing i did was not learning how to conduct effective voter registration nor how to start my career in politics but rather take note of the overwhelming number of people who said “ellenois” instead of “illinois” because that was AMAZING. i should look at an isogloss to verify what i actually heard

Have decided to forego brunch with mayors to instead have brunch by myself because I am infinitely cooler (except the mayor of where I go to school. He listens to our radio station… He’s aight)

Also I have two queen beds at my disposal and I’m not entirely sure what to do is there anyway I can sleep on both in one night maybe

Me: I should go bar hopping with everyone
Me later: I’m going to bed at 9:35 instead goodbye

Are my (former?)boss and I on an emoji basis? Probably not, but I have to cope with misguided liberals for an entire weekend, so I don’t really care. Hashtag not doin enough hashtag no one knows where I fall on the political spectrum
